PHOENIX — The University of Arizona announced in a press release on Monday that it plans to create a fully online university and acquire the assets of Ashford University.
UArizona’s Global Campus will aim to serve nontraditional students around the world, such as veterans, full-time parents or those who require flexibility in their schedules in order to advance their education.
“As students look for new avenues to attain higher education, the accessibility and innovative approach of University of Arizona Global Campus will help a new generation of students find success,” university President Robert C. Robbins said in the release.
“By establishing Global Campus, the University of Arizona is building on its land grant legacy of expanding access to high-quality educational opportunities that not only meet the needs of students but result in exceptional academic achievement.”
Ashford University is an online university with approximately 35,000 students across the U.S. and is owned by Zovio, a Chandler-based education technology services company.
UArizona has signed an agreement to purchase the assets of Ashford from Zovio, which will continue to provide its education technology services under a long-term strategic services agreement.
“Innovative approaches to higher education present traditional, land-grant universities with the opportunity to pair their mission to give students greater access with a forward-thinking vision creates a broader, interconnected campus beyond its own gates,” board of trustees chair of Ashford University Gregory Geoffrey said in the release.
The new online education format is expected to commence next year.
