PHOENIX — After coming in at No. 30 in 2019, Arizona dropped 10 spots to No. 40 in a 2020 ranking of most energy-expensive states.

A study published by Wallethub shows that Arizona’s year-over-year average monthly energy costs decreased from $297 to $254.

The average cost per month in natural gas, motor fuel and home heating through oil in the state all ranked well below the national average.

Arizonans spend an average of $18 per month on natural gas, ranking among the lowest four states in the country in consumption.

The majority of Arizona’s energy costs come from electricity.

Spending an average of $146 per month, Arizona ranks No. 15 in the country in spending in the category.

Neighboring states Colorado and New Mexico had lower total monthly energy costs than Arizona, while Utah and California ranked higher but still below the national average.

Connecticut has the highest energy costs in the country for the second year in a row, spending $372 per month. Last year they averaged $373 per month.

Washington D.C. held the lowest monthly energy costs, averaging $199.
