Car accident shuts down Interstate 10 past downtown Phoenix

PHOENIX – One person was seriously injured in a car accident that shut down a stretch of westbound Interstate 10 in Phoenix for hours Monday, authorities said.
Lanes were closed at 51st Avenue from the single-car wreck that happened around 1 a.m. near Loop 202.
The roadway reopened around 7:30 a.m. but the HOV lramp Loop 202 remained closed.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said in an email a vehicle struck a crash cushion in the HOV ramp and went across eight lanes of traffic before hitting a cement wall.
A woman in the passenger seat was seriously injured and taken to a hospital. The driver was arrested for suspicion of driving while impaired.
Troopers said neither had been wearing seat belts.
