PHOENIX — Firefighters successfully protected a golf course and houses that were threatened by a brush fire that broke out Thursday morning in a West Valley nature park.

The fire started before 9 a.m. on a mountain in the Thunderbird Conservation Park near 59th Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road, according to the Glendale Fire Department.

Helicopters assisted ground crews and picking up water nearby lakes, including from the 500 Club golf course, to douse the blaze, officials said.

The fire consumed about 190 acres before it was brought under control, the Glendale Fire Department said Friday in a press release. No injuries were reported.

Crews on the ground kept the flames at bay when it crept close to the maintenance area of the golf course, the release said.

Planes were utilized when the blaze was moving toward homes on the north side of Pinnacle Peak Road, the release said.

The fire had also threatened the golf course’s maintenance area.

Residents in the area were asked to stay inside and keep an eye out for spot fires.

All roads in the area that were closed Thursday were reopened by Friday.

Thunderbird Conservation Park is an 1,185-acre recreation area with 15 miles of multi-use trails in a desert environment.
