PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix shot a man with a knife they said went after an officer in a parking lot Sunday night.
The 55-year-old suspect was in critical condition in a hospital but expected to survive, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.
The man had been threatening customers at a store near 43rd Avenue and Union Hills Drive around 8 p.m.,
When an officer reached the scene, the suspect, who had been standing near a car, veered toward someone else standing in the lot.
The officer, on her first solo assignment, Fortune said, repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife; he refused each time and began to move toward her.
The officer fired, hitting him at least once.
It was the 24th shooting by law enforcement in the Valley this year, the eighth involving Phoenix police, according to reports tracked by KTAR News 92.3 FM.
