PHOENIX — The Mangum Fire burning in northern Arizona had consumed 71,043 acres and was 33% contained Monday evening, according to officials.

The fire is the second largest fire currently burning in the United States.

The blaze burning in the Kaibab National Forest has forced the closure of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park until further notice.

The wildfire had not burned within the park, but smoke was visible from both the North and South rims.

Thursday’s evacuation orders for residents along the House Rock Road area north of Highway 89A are still in effect, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 669 total personnel are battling the blaze.

The fire also resulted in road closures that include Highway 89A between Bitter Springs and Fredonia, as well as State Route 67 to Grand Canyon National Park.

The fire destroyed two cabins and two outbuildings in Mangum Camp, Forest Service officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
