PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Economic Security announced Thursday it received additional assistance to help low-income individuals affected by the coronavirus.

AZDES received more than $24 million from the coronavirus relief bill for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and the Community Services Block Grant.

$16.5 million went to LIHEAP which will be used to provide assistance with energy bills. CSBG received $8.1 million to provide financial support for house payments and employment assistance.

“Additional funding for these programs is crucial, particularly as we enter summer,” department director Tom Betlach said in a press release.

“Together with our community partners, we will be able to help more Arizonans with their utility bills, rent and other needs while we continue to recover from the pandemic.”

The funds will be dispersed through the community action agencies where people can apply for the assistance.

To qualify for LIHEAP or CSBG, the applicant must have an income that falls within the guidelines.

Higher priority is given if someone in the home is 60 years of age or older, an individual with disabilities or a child under the age of six.
