Arizona reports second consecutive day of record coronavirus numbers

May 30, 2020, 9:10 AM

PHOENIX — The Arizona health department reported 790 new coronavirus cases and 18 additional deaths Saturday morning.

The state’s documented total of cases increased to 19,255, and the death count reached 903.

It was the highest number of cases for a daily state report, although it doesn’t represent the actual activity over the past 24 hours.

The daily reports present data after the state health department receives statistics and compiles them, which can lag by several days.

More than 307,000 combined tests for active COVID-19 infections (PCR testing) and antibodies (serology testing) have been given in Arizona, including 10,220 added to the total Saturday. Of those that have been processed, 5.6% have come back positive.

More than 217,000 of the tests, including 7,234 reported Saturday morning, have been for the virus (PCR), with a 6.7% positive rate.

For the over 90,000 antibody (serology) tests given, including 2,986 added in the latest report, the positive rate rose to 3.0% from 2.9% on Friday.

The Arizona Department of Health Services has been providing case and testing updates on its website each morning. The dashboard includes, among other information, testing trends, updated hospital capacity and a ZIP code map of cases.

On Friday morning, the totals were 18,465 cases and 885 deaths.

Coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe outcomes, including pneumonia and death.

In most cases, a positive test won’t change a patient’s treatment plan.

According to data compiled and regularly updated by Johns Hopkins University, there were over 5.9 million cases and more than 365,000 deaths globally as of Saturday morning.

We want to hear from you.
