PHOENIX – With job loss hitting Arizona hard in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Maricopa County has two-thirds of the unemployment claims in the state.
The Maricopa Association of Governments created a zip code map that shows the number of unemployment claims filed to the Arizona Department of Economic Security.
The data covers unemployment claims filed between March 14 and May 14.
“These maps can be used by employers and policymakers to understand where there are large numbers of people looking for work,” Mesa Councilmember David Luna said in a press release Thursday.
“We can use that knowledge to target resources to the local economies that need help the most.”
According to the data, the north Tempe zip code 85281 saw more than 6,600 unemployment claims during that time.
In the Phoenix area, zip codes with the highest number of unemployment claims are in and around Tempe north of Baseline Road and east Phoenix near the Phoenix Mountains and Paradise Valley mall.
Other areas that have been hit hard by unemployment are south Scottsdale, south Chandler near Arizona Avenue and Peoria near the Arrowhead Towne Center.
Last week, 31,901 new unemployment claims were filed, bringing the total number of unemployment claims in the state to 303,012.
