Driver in Tempe car-pedestrian collision charged with manslaughter

PHOENIX – The driver in a fatal car-pedestrian collision in Tempe on Thursday night has been arrested on manslaughter and DUI charges, authorities said.
A 77-year-old woman was crossing Mill Avenue from west to east at Del Rio Drive around 9 p.m. when she was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound, the Tempe Police Department said Friday.
The woman, who was not identified pending next-of-kin notification, died of her injuries.
Investigators determined the driver, 31-year-old John Valenzuela, was under the influence of alcohol at the time, police said.
He was booked on one count each of manslaughter, DUI to the slightest degree and DUI with blood alcohol content .08 or above, police said.
No other details were made available.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
