PHOENIX — The city of Goodyear has a new police chief after promoting its acting chief on Monday.

Goodyear Police Chief Santiago Rodriguez had served as Goodyear’s acting chief since October, according to a press release.

I’m so honored and humbled for this opportunity,” Rodriguez said in the release.

“I’m proud to be able to lead such a dedicated team in law enforcement in a city I love.”

Rodriguez began his career in law enforcement in 1996 as a detention officer in Glendale.

He became a voluntary reserve officer in Goodyear two years later, and, following several promotions, became deputy chief in 2015.

“I truly believe that they key to a safer and better community is partnering with our residents,” Rodriguez added.

“Simply responding to 911 calls isn’t good enough for me. Interacting with our residents one-on-one each day helps us better understand who we serve in order to prevent crime and build a stronger city.”

Rodriguez also currently serves as vice president for the FBI National Academy Arizona Board and will be its president in 2021.

Goodyear’s former police chief, Jerry Geier, was fired on Dec. 20 after being placed on administrative leave in early October over allegations of unspecified misconduct.
