State Route 87 partially closed due to 5-acre brush fire

PHOENIX — State Route 87 has been partially closed due to a five-acre brush fire, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The northbound lanes at at milepost 231 near Mazatal peak and southbound lanes at State Route 188, were both initially closed around 1 p.m.

It was then reported by ADOT around 1:40 p.m. that the left lane of State Route 87 northbound reopened near milepost 231, while the northbound’s right lane and both southbound lanes of State Route 87 remained closed.

Around 3:30 p.m., ADOT reported that both lanes on southbound State Route 87 had been reopened.

As of 5:30 p.m, firefighters were working to extinguish hot spots. The fire is expected to be completely contained by the end of the day.

No injuries or structural damage has been reported.

The fire is believed to be caused by humans and is being investigated.

ADOT tweeted at 6:45 p.m. that traffic was starting to clear but was still backlogged.
