PHOENIX – A special education teacher in Phoenix who is helping her students with their math online has received the latest KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Gaydos and Chad Show’s Pay Tribute to a Teacher award.

Diamond Davis of Sunnyslope High School crafted curriculum for the teens, is teaching them and also writing and developing individualized plan reports for them, all from home.

“Students love technology, so that’s why I try to implement it in my classroom,” Davis, the single mother of a 9-year-old boy with special needs, said.

“With what’s going on, I think technology in the class is so important.”

Arizona schools were closed for the rest of the year because of the coronavirus outbreak in late March. Initially they were closed for two weeks.

Davis said she talked regularly with her graduating students.

The person who nominated Davis wrote that the teacher was missing out on pay normally associated with working extracurricular activities since schools have been shut down and that Davis worked overtime to get things done.

That dedication earned her the award’s $2,500 prize.

“Really?” Davis said when she learned she had won the money.

She planned to buy supplies for her classroom and comic books and graphic novels for students to help them better enjoy reading.

Davis said she may just buy herself a board game with part of the money.

We want to hear from you.
