St. Mary’s to distribute food Thursday at ASU’s Phoenix Municipal Stadium

PHOENIX — St. Mary’s Food Bank and Arizona State University are teaming up to help curb the fight against hunger as the spread coronavirus in the state continues.
On Thursday, St. Mary’s is holding its next major mobile food distribution in the Valley at ASU’s Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Any family in need is welcome to attend from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. or until the food runs out.
ASU volunteers, including coaches from the school’s athletic department, will be assisting in the food distribution.
It’s a drive-thru, no contact mobile pantry, with social distancing measures strictly enforced. Families must remain in their vehicles while one volunteer loads the car.
“St. Mary’s thanks the ASU Community for stepping up to help during this difficult time,” the food bank said in a press release.
“This is one of dozens of mobile pantries St. Mary’s has added all over the state to target areas where other food banks and agency partners have closed or are unable to keep up with demand.”
Two weeks ago, St. Mary’s had its largest Phoenix-based mobile pantry delivery to date as four tractor-trailers carried nearly 100,000 pounds of food about an hour north of Flagstaff to the Navajo Nation in Tuba City.
Prior to opening, tribal officials estimated the line to receive food was five miles long. Navajo County has been one of the hardest hit areas in the state by coronavirus with a total of 682 cases and 18 deaths.
On Wednesday, the state health department reported 11 new deaths, increasing the total to 304, and 254 additional positive tests, pushing the case total to 7,202 in Arizona.
