PHOENIX — The Arizona Attorney General’s Office is warning of scammers posting fake work-from-home job opportunities during the coronavirus outbreak.

Attorney General Mark Brnovich said in a press release that scammers are posting opportunities on social media and career websites, and subsequently conducting interviews.

They then ask for money to purchase training, software or merchandise that they claim you will need to gain employment.

The scammers may also send a fraudulent check and then ask individuals to purchase something for them or to route money somewhere else.

Brnovich’s office compiled a list of signs that a work-from-home opportunity could be a scam:

  • Asking for money to pay for a background check, starter-kit, software, membership, training, or “discounted” merchandise.
  • Asking you to move or accept money on behalf of the “employer” or someone else.
  • Offering high pay for little work.
  • Not requiring or recommending any experience or skills.
  • Promising you will earn a lot of money fast.
  • Extremely short or no interview.
  • Seeking financial/account information as a pre-condition for an interview or employment.

If you believe you have been the victim of consumer fraud, you can file a consumer complaint by visiting the Attorney General’s website.

We want to hear from you.
