Arizona Sen. Martha McSally raises over $212,000 for coronavirus relief

PHOENIX — Arizona Sen. Martha McSally announced on Tuesday her campaign raised over $212,000 for coronavirus aid during the “15 Days of Giving” initiative.
The Republican senator running to keep her seat in November against Democrat Mark Kelly had pledged her April paycheck to the Salvation Army of Arizona.
The Tucson lawmaker also suspended her campaign fundraising on April 1 for two weeks to help the cause.
“I put my resources to work to raise money and volunteer for the Salvation Army, helping those directly affected by COVID-19,” McSally said in a press release.
“This is an unprecedented time, and we must continue to come together as Americans and help each other,” she added.

The Salvation Army, a nonprofit organization, is providing meals to families and seniors and supporting those hardest hit with rental and utility assistance, according to the release.
“We each need to do our part, whether that is raising money for charities, volunteering if able, or even getting groceries for our neighbors,” McSally said.
Arizonans made 72,103 initial unemployment claims on top of 226,793 continuing claims in the week that ended April 18, according to the Arizona Department of Economic Security.
There were only 21,439 initial and continued unemployment claims for the week ending March 14.
