PHOENIX – As the coronavirus affects daily life, those in Arizona who have Alzheimer’s disease are encouraged to continue participating in familiar activities inside and maintain a similar lifestyle.
Alzheimer’s Foundation of America President and CEO Chuck Fuschillo told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday that it’s important for caregivers to help those with dementia-related illnesses maintain some normalcy.
“We hear mostly from the caregivers that these are challenging times to stay connected with loved ones and friends, but we always encourage them to do that,” Fuschillo said.
“Make sure that they try to maintain their daily schedule whether it’s activities or socialization through technology or just a phone call.”
The foundation is trying to help make it easier to do so.
It is continuing to host programs online every day ranging from Irish step dancing to a technology class to mediation and yoga. The Facebook page keeps videos from previous classes posted.
Additionally, the foundation’s helpline with advice for families impacted by Alzheimer’s is available seven days a week at 866-232-8484.
Among the most important pieces of advice is to stay in communication with loved ones who have Alzheimer’s.
For those who have relatives living at nursing or assisted living homes, Fuschillo encouraged video calls while visitation is barred.
“Social connection is so critically important and there are ways to do it in this day in age with technology,” Fuschillo said.
Other recommendations from the foundation include sending photographs and care packages.
For those who live with someone who has a dementia-related illnesses, the foundation encouraged leaving work supplies at the office, not bringing outside items in the home and changing clothes when arriving back at the house.
