PHOENIX – Former Vice President Joe Biden is opening his lead against President Donald Trump in traditionally red state Arizona, a poll of likely voters showed Tuesday.

Biden has pulled ahead of Trump 52% to 43%, in the general election survey conducted by Phoenix-based OH Predictive Insights. The Democrat led the Republican commander in chief by six percentage points in a similar poll in March.

The 600 poll participants were called on cellphones or landlines April 7-8. The margin of error was 4%.

Breaking down the survey, there were 234 Republicans, 204 Democrats and 162 independents, with 348 of them 55 or older.

“Trump’s biggest pain-point is in Maricopa County and will need to triage that if he hopes to carry Arizona’s eleven Electoral College votes come November,” chief pollster Mike Noble said in a press release.

But Trump supporters were more charged up about their candidate than Biden’s backers.

Nearly three-quarters of the Trump supporters polled described themselves as “extremely enthusiastic” in their approval of Trump.

Biden supporters were at 60% in that response. And almost 10% said they weren’t enthusiastic about voting for him.

Only 2% of Trump followers were unenthusiastic about voting for him.

Biden is the last candidate standing for his party. Sen. Bernie Sanders dropped out last week and endorsed his onetime rival Monday.

“If coronavirus is still rampaging through the country in November, campaigns may struggle to turn out voters on Election Day,” Jacob Joss, data analyst at OH Predictive, said in a press release.

“While the president faces a significant deficit, in these unprecedented times he is by no means out of this race.”
