PHOENIX — A major cockfighting operation was shut down by Phoenix police on Thursday night, according to authorities.
The incident took place around 5 p.m. near Seventh Street and Broadway Road in south Phoenix.
Upon arrival of the officers’ response to a call of possible animal cruelty and illegal gambling, a group of subjects ran from officers, police said.
Officers managed to detain several of those attempting to flee the scene, authorities said.
A search warrant was then implemented and cockfighting paraphernalia, including 203 roosters and over 100 hens, was found on the property, according to police.
The Arizona Humane Society seized the roosters and two dogs, the latter of which required immediate medical care due to the poor condition they were found in, authorities said.
Ten spectators were cited and released for being present at a cockfight.
No additional information was made immediately available. The investigation is ongoing.
