Arizona reports 2,456 total COVID-19 cases, 1 additional death

Apr 6, 2020, 9:04 AM | Updated: 12:44 pm

PHOENIX — Arizona has 2,456 reported positive tests for COVID-19 and 65 deaths from the disease caused by the new coronavirus, the state health department reported Monday morning.

After two consecutive daily reports of double-digit deaths, the number of fatalities went up by only one in the past day. The total of deaths has increased daily since Friday from 41 to 52 to 64 to 65.

The number of reported tests given was up to 32,534, and increase of more than 5,000 from a day earlier. Seven percent of tests processed have come back positive.

The Arizona Department of Health Services has been providing daily case and testing updates on its website each morning.

The state reported 2,269 cases and 64 deaths, with 27,160 tests given, on Sunday morning.

The number of cases in Maricopa County, the state’s most-populous and hardest-hit county, increased by 107 to 1,433 on Monday, according to the state report.

The Phoenix-area death total remained unchanged at 31. Of Maricopa County’s cases, 18% of patients have required hospitalization.

For most people, coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 8,910 deaths from more than 330,000 COVID-19 cases as of Monday’s daily update.

According to data compiled and regularly updated by Johns Hopkins University, there were more than 1.2 million cases and 70,000 deaths globally as of Monday morning.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
