PHOENIX — Coronavirus death tolls continue to rise, nationwide unemployment sees the sharpest one-month jump since 1975 and a reptile sanctuary in in Phoenix advises an alert for native snake populations.
Here are some stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the weekend.
Arizona coronavirus cases increase to 2,269, death toll at 64
Maricopa County continues to take the brunt of coronavirus cases in Arizona.
COVID-19 cases in Maricopa County, the state’s most-populous county, increased by 155 to 1,326 on Sunday, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.
A total of 31 deaths have occurred in Maricopa County, with 244 hospitalizations, according to the county.
Phoenix reptile sanctuary issues snake alert amid COVID-19 outbreak
As Valley residents adjust their lives to the COVID-19 outbreak, they are now also advised to be on alert for the dangers associated with native snake populations.
The Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary announced a snake safety alert in a press release issued Wednesday, reporting having received 20 requests for snake removal services in the prior four days.

Officials on Sunday reported the state was up to 2,269 coronavirus cases, an increase of 250 from Saturday morning.
There are now 64 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the state, 12 more than the last report.
Ducey to shut down salons, barber shops, other services during outbreak
Gov. Doug Ducey on Friday announced additional guidance that will shut down salons, barber shops and other services that were initially deemed essential during the coronavirus outbreak in an executive order announced last month.
The services ceased operations on 5 p.m. on Saturday, Ducey said in a press release.
Tanning salons, tattoo parlors, spas and massage parlors are also included in Ducey’s list.
Trump approves Ducey’s disaster declaration to get funding for Arizona
The Presidential Major Disaster Declaration requested by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has been approved, the governor tweeted Saturday afternoon.
Approved by President Donald Trump, the declaration will help the state get more support for the state’s coronavirus response.
Additional federal resources will be supplied to Arizona to help provide access to mental health care, support for tribal health care workers, help low-income residents get legal help, food assistance and other services and give the state grants to reduce risks in future emergencies.
