Mesa police officer fatally shoots suspect during traffic stop

PHOENIX – A Mesa police officer conducting a traffic stop fatally shot a man riding a moped late Thursday, the department said.
The unidentified man was shot near Center Street and Broadway Road around 10:50 p.m., Detective Jason Flam said in an email Friday.
Flam said the officer made the stop, called for emergency backup, followed by the shooting.
The man died at a hospital.
The officer wasn’t injured.
No other details were immediately available.
The investigation was ongoing, Flam said.
It was the first Mesa officer-involved shooting 15th officer-involved shooting of the year by Valley law enforcement.
