PHOENIX — Arizona State has canceled its on-site graduation ceremonies and will instead hold online commencements for the spring 2020 graduates, President Michael Crow wrote in a letter to the class.

ASU joins the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University in calling off their on-site graduation ceremonies.

In the letter, Crow called it “the only responsible decision and course of action available.”

The undergraduate and graduate commencements for ASU were scheduled for May 11.

Graduates will be able to walk in December 2020 or May 2021 if they choose.

“As we push forward to make this happen, I am mindful of the disappointment that you and your family will likely share in not being able to gather in-person at ASU,” Crow wrote.

“As a first-generation college graduate, who came from a family where college attainment was a life-changing achievement, I can appreciate the anticipation of reaching this defining milestone.”

NAU announced March 23 that in-person commencement had been canceled.

On March 20, UA announced it was planning an “alternate graduation experience” in place of the ceremony.

We want to hear from you.
