Valley Metro to reduce Express, RAPID bus service due to COVID-19

PHOENIX — Valley Metro will soon begin operating fewer Express and RAPID bus trips due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The change is set to begin on April 6 and be in effect until further notice.

Fewer trips will be made each weekday morning and evening in an effort to maintain local service for those who fully rely on public transit for critical trips, according to a press release.

Local bus, circulators and light rail will continue to operate on a regular schedule, but the service is being closely monitored and may be adjusted based on resources.

“Public transit continues to serve as a lifeline for essential workers in the healthcare, government and social service sectors,” Scott Smith, Valley Metro CEO, said in a press release. “We are reallocating our skilled workforce of operators, supervisors and maintenance workers to focus on our local bus routes at this time.”

Valley Metro has seen less demand for commuter trips recently, according to the release.

Gov. Doug Ducey on Tuesday ordered all Arizona residents to remain in their homes except for essential needs to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The “Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected” executive order will remain in place at least until April 30.
