PHOENIX — A man was arrested early Tuesday after allegedly shooting more than 100 rounds at authorities in Chandler.

Zachary Victor Rhodes, 26, was booked on seven counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for shooting at members of the Chandler Police Department.

Around midnight, Chandler police received 911 calls of shots fired at the Hamilton apartments in downtown Chandler, police said.

Upon arrival, the first officer dispatched came under fire from Rhodes, hiding behind his vehicle for cover. Multiple rounds struck the patrol car, including the windshield, police said.

More officers and a Mesa Police Department helicopter were called in for assistance. As backup arrived, the suspect continued to fire as he moved east down Commonwealth Avenue, police said. The helicopter located Rhodes soon after arriving on scene.

The suspect then moved into a dirt lot nearby, where he complied with commands of the Mesa police officers from the helicopter. He was taken into custody at 1 a.m.

No injuries were reported and no shots were fired by the officers.

Police found an AR-15 and a handgun in Rhodes’ possession and found loaded rifle magazines after conducting a search through his apartment.

Rhodes is currently being held on a $2 million cash bond.
