Mesa suspends shutting off utilities during coronavirus pandemic

PHOENIX — Mesa residents who have fallen on hard financial times due to the coronavirus outbreak will not have their utilites shut off by the city.
During a Mesa City Council meeting on Monday, Mayor John Giles confirmed that electric, gas and water services will continue to be provided to residents with delinquent accounts for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Several councilmembers and I were concerned for Mesa residents that may be struggling financially already or because their business or school has been closed temporarily as part of the COVID-19 mitigation,” Giles said
“We wanted to make sure that they were not additionally negatively impacted by having their utility services shut-off for non-payment.”

Delinquency notices will still be delivered to Mesa residents via mail, however, and they are encouraged to call the city’s customer service line to arrange payments and allow staff to make the proper notations on their accounts.
“In the end, we are all in this together and we have to be willing to work with each other to see this thing through,” Giles said.
