PHOENIX — On the same day Arizona leaders announced a two week closure of schools due to coronavirus, Gov. Doug Ducey recommended a statewide suspension of all large public events.

In accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ducey encouraged the cancellation of all “large events and mass gatherings.”

On Sunday, the CDC provided an update regarding its guidelines for large public gatherings, recommending that event organizers “cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States” for the next eight weeks.

“Examples of large events and mass gatherings include conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings & other types of assemblies,” Ducey continued.

Ducey’s announcement comes after many Arizona cities, universities and businesses have already employed proactive steps to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The CDC went on to recommend that such events only be carried out if organizers can protect vulnerable populations and offer means of hand hygiene and social distancing.

However, the CDC’s guidelines do not apply to organizations such as “schools, institutes of higher learning, or businesses.”
