PHOENIX — State lawmakers are off for the weekend, but when they return on Monday, they’ll be unaccompanied by the public.
Both legislative chambers are closing their public galleries due to the coronavirus.
“It’ll be a touch of sadness to look up there and have those seats be empty,” said Rep. Aaron Lieberman told KTAR News 92.3 FM.
There will also be no public tours or visits of dignitaries, and limited attendance at committee meetings.
Lieberman believes these precautions to be the correct course of action.
“This coronavirus is something we haven’t quite seen before, and we just need to do all we can to keep Arizonans safe,” he said.
In the meantime, Lieberman encourages the public to email and call your lawmakers, watch cable station ACTV for proceedings and log onto AZLeg.gov for the latest on all legislation.
A statement from Republican leadership says “Members and staff are being encouraged to avoid in-person meetings; holding meetings telephonically or via Skype or a similar service instead.
“The Senate and House will further increase efforts to clean and disinfect the buildings throughout the day, wiping down door handles and surfaces. Employees who are sick will stay home or go home.”
