Old Spice’s new ‘Mom Song’ ad is disturbing and bizarre

Have you seen the new commercial for Old Spice (#MomSong)? It debuted over the weekend during the NFL Wild Card games. To say it’s disturbing and bizarre would be an understatement.
The theme is sad moms singing about their sons growing up too soon and becoming men after using Old Spice body spray. Things get weird quickly as the moms begin to spy on their sons as they spend time with their girlfriends.
I can’t blame Old Spice for thinking outside the box. The ad has already gone viral with over a million hits.
But, just because it’s memorable doesn’t make it good. Some people say it’s funny. Others, like me, think it’s freaky. I guess that’s the point. I think it’s so creepy I’d never watch it again. I was completely turned off, so I’m not sure that qualifies as a successful ad campaign.
