Robin Thicke not turned on by Miley twerking

Oct 11, 2013, 4:48 PM | Updated: 4:48 pm

Robin Thicke just sat down with Oprah Winfrey for Sunday’s edition of Oprah’s Next Chapter and talked about what he thought of Miley Cyrus dancing provocatively around him in a flesh-toned latex bikini top and shorts while he sang his mega-hit “Blurred Lines” during their controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance.

“Well, I was onstage, [so] I didn’t see it,” Thicke said. “So to me, I’m walking out towards Miley, I’m not thinking sex, I’m thinking fun. …I’m singing my butt off. I’m singing and I’m looking at the sky and I’m singing and I’m not really paying attention to all that. That’s on her.”
“People ask me, ‘Do you twerk?’ I go, ‘Listen, I’m the twerkee,'” he continues, laughing. “I’m twerked upon. I don’t twerk myself, OK? I’m just twerked upon.”

Really?!? Let me see if I have this straight. Cyrus was wearing a skimpy latex outfit, bumping and grinding against you, and you didn’t really notice or pay attention to any of that? You were too caught up in singing and looking up at the sky? Wow, you may be the only man in America who could have a young woman’s booty twerking below your belt and not notice!

Or, more likely, you’re just trying to stay clear of the controversy.

According to an interview in the November issue of Vanity Fair, Thicke spent his whole career playing it safe, being a gentleman, and never doing anything controversial. He admits that MTV told him beforehand that Cyrus was going to dance around and she might bend over and he said he didn’t care; he just wanted to entertain people. “Let’s give [the audience] something they’re not ready for,” he said at the time. “Let’s make them talk.”

Here’s my take on it. Thicke knew EXACTLY how the performance was going to go since he and Cyrus had rehearsed it several times ahead of time. He was fine with all of it. What he didn’t anticipate was that Cyrus would be the talk of the town, not him. She wound up with the attention he was so desperately seeking, and he wound up with the criticism for being an older married man (considered “the adult” in the situation) who should have known better.

Personally, I would have preferred for him to say that he loved how the performance turned out or that in retrospect it was a terrible mistake. But, to say that you were on board and you wanted people to talk about the performance, and then act like you didn’t notice that you were essentially getting a lap dance doesn’t make any sense.

Let’s be honest, your plan was to get attention for yourself and you failed miserably. The truth is you wanted people to talk about YOU, not Cyrus, and when they didn’t you didn’t know what to say. Your plan backfired. Why don’t you just own it and move on!

Thicke’s interview on Oprah’s Next Chapter airs this Sunday, Oct. 13th.
