Hugo Chavez died this week. Many despised the Venezuelan president, but he was also undoubtedly beloved.
Former President Jimmy Carter wrote of Chavez, “We have never doubted his commitment to improving the lives of millions of his fellow countrymen.”
Of course, this was also a man who was friends with Fidel Castro and openly despised America. So, here in the U.S., we can’t stand the man (unless you’re Sean Penn or Oliver Stone). Abroad, the feeling is not so universally felt.
What is it that we can all agree upon this week? That Chavez didn’t do to the name Hugo what Hitler did to Adolf. As proof, here’s my top five list of favorite Hugos.
