PHOENIX – A week before the Democratic presidential preference primary in Phoenix, likely voters in Arizona have said overwhelmingly they’d choose Joe Biden, a new poll showed Tuesday.

The former vice president was the overwhelming favorite in the March 17 election with 45% to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 17%, the Phoenix-based OH Predictive Insights poll found.

Nearly 40% of the 398 likely voters surveyed had already cast their ballots.

The two candidates are scheduled to debate in Phoenix on March 15.

“Bernie Sanders’ visit to the Grand Canyon State last week won’t be enough to dig him out of the Grand Canyon-sized hole he finds himself in just before the March 17 preference election,” OH Predictive Insights managing partner Mike Noble said in a press release.

Sanders visited Phoenix for a rally Thursday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The poll was conducted March 3-4 and had a margin of error of about 5%.

Researchers also said that of 233 poll participants who hadn’t voted yet, 44% said they would go with Biden.

When it came to an ideological breakdown, 69% who preferred a moderate candidate opted for billionaire businessman Mike Bloomberg, to 64% for Biden.

For those who identified as liberal/progressive, Sanders had 82% support. But 1 out of 4 supporters of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren preferred a moderate candidate.

Bloomberg, onetime mayor of New York City, and Warren, both dropped out of the race last week, after disappointing Super Tuesday finishes March 3.

Bloomberg quit March 4 and endorsed Biden; Warren pulled out the next day but has yet to announce her endorsement decision.

Biden’s campaign has been picking up steam since winning the South Carolina primary Feb. 29.

He then won delegate-rich Texas and nine of 13 other states voting on Super Tuesday.
