Nelson Mandela: A true world leader among world leaders

Dec 6, 2013, 9:30 PM | Updated: 9:30 pm

Thursday, we experienced a huge loss with the passing of Nelson Mandela.

As the world turned its attention to celebrate the iconic man’s life and achievements, I was struck with the notion that Nelson Mandela was a world leader among world leaders.

As we know, President Barack Obama, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and British Prime Minister David Cameron are world leaders. But let’s face it: They are simply leaders of some of the most powerful nations in the world. Though they are acknowledged as world leaders, are any of them of the same caliber as Mandela?

Mandela was more than a simple leader of a country. Though some of his history is in question, he was a leader and the face of a movement to end apartheid, a system of racism and segregation. He spent 27 years in prison for the wrongs that he believed needed to be made right.

Those wrongs were made right in 1990 when Apartheid was abolished and later and when he became the first black president of South Africa in 1994. World leaders come and go but each generation is lucky to live in an era where a true world leader walks among them.

Nelson Mandela: A true world leader among world leaders. Godspeed, Mr. Mandela.

I was right about staying in Iraq

I hate to say it, but this humble, or not-so-humble, KTAR weekend talk show host told you so. Pulling out of Iraq was a bad idea. I've said it many times on the Mike & Winey Show.
