What’s it like to live in the wake of the Yarnell Fire?

Sometimes your news colleagues say your clothes smell like smoke. They will tease you when you return to the newsroom after covering a wildfire asking where your helmet is.

And if you’re KTAR reporter Jim Cross, you smile because that controls the tears that are always so close when you vividly recall the tragedies like Yarnell. It seemed nearly impossible that with today’s firefighting technology, we could have lost 19 of the Granite Mountain Hotshots on one fateful day.

I knew it happened and that I could believe it because Jim Cross reported it. What’s it like having that kind of job? It means when it appears you have something in your eyes it’s probably just because of the smoke on your clothes.
