Why did it take until Wednesday for Gov. Jan Brewer to finally make a public announcement that she would not be running for governor in the next election?

Under most circumstances, an official statement like that would be major news, but in this case, the only group of Arizonans that seemed really attentive to the pronouncement were the elementary school children who made up her audience.

I have yet to talk to anyone in any division of politics who has understood why she was talking about the possibility of a third term, since it is clearly prohibited by the Arizona Constitution — that point is agreed upon by Democrats, Republicans, independents, Whigs and Tories.

So what was she thinking?

Maybe it’s the practical jokester side that Jan Brewer hasn’t displayed before. Perhaps this was nothing more than all of us being “punked” by the governor of Arizona.

Of course, there are those who contend that that’s been going on for years.

I’m Pat McMahon.
