Deadly wrong-way accident closes freeway south of Phoenix

PHOENIX – A wrong-way driver smashed into another car on a freeway outside of Phoenix late Sunday, killing one person, authorities said.
The 11:40 p.m. crash shut down southbound State Route 347 near the city of Maricopa.
The driver was heading north and hit the other vehicle head-on, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said in an email early Monday.
The driver of the second car was pronounced dead at a hospital; the wrong-way driver suffered serious injuries.
Traffic was exiting at Riggs Road.
The roadway was reopened shortly before 7 a.m.
