Crash near 35th Avenue, Thunderbird Road leaves 1 dead

PHOENIX – A 24-year-old man is dead after a car crash near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road on Friday.
Around 12:18 p.m. on Friday, a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by a 51-year-old man was waiting to turn left onto 35th Avenue.
At that time, a 2004 Honda Odyssey driven by a 28-year-old was traveling on Thunderbird Road, approaching the light.
When the light turned red, the Explorer was attempting to clear the intersection, but the Odyssey ran the red light.
The collision sent the Odyssey into a light pole at the intersection. The two occupants were transported to a local hospital where the passenger, 24-year-old Derrick Coleman, was pronounced dead.
The 28-year-old driver sustained serious injuries and is still hospitalized.
Impairment is considered to be a factor and a search warrant for a blood draw was served.
The 51-year-old driver was not injured and stayed on the scene.
