PHOENIX – Just after temperatures in the Phoenix area hit 80 degrees for the first time this year, a cooling trend was expected to follow with predictions of a rainy weekend.

The National Weather Service said Thursday’s high of 82 degrees will be quickly replaced by temperatures in the 70s and clouds for Friday, the first day – but only one game – of Cactus League baseball action. By Saturday the odds of rain falling were 100%.

As much as an inch of precipitation could drop here.

“After midnight we’ll see showers spread into the Valley and pretty much be widespread by midmorning,” Phoenix bureau meteorologist Andrew Deemer told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday.

But the rain was likely to come and go by Saturday afternoon, Deemer said. The highs will be in the upper 60s. A full slate of exhibition baseball was scheduled for the day. Most games start around 1 p.m.

Carefree and Cave Creek were in line to get more rain than other parts of the area. The North Valley cities could get hit with 1½ to 1¾ inches.

A flash flood watch will go into effect across Maricopa and Gila counties, set for 5 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Sunday skies were to be free of rain, but there will still be some clouds with a high of 66 degrees.

Monday should be sunny as the temperatures climb back into the 70s.
