PHOENIX — A group of BASIS Peoria middle school students will be heading to our nation’s capital.

The team of scientifically minded students recently won their regional competition for the 2020 National Science Bowl, according to a press release.

In Washington D.C. the group will face off against other regional teams from around the country at the NSB National Finals, which will be held from April 30 to May 4.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the NSB tests students’ knowledge by immersing them in “a fast-paced question-and-answer format where they solve technical problems and answer questions on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics and math,” according to the release.

Teams that will compete in the NSB National Finals are those who have emerged victorious from a total of 112 different regional middle and high school tournaments.

Regional competitions will continue throughout the country until the end of March.

Science departments of the 16 top-performing high school teams and 16 top-performing middle school teams will each receive $1,000.

Although prizes for the 2020 NSB’s top two performing high schools have yet to be announced, last year’s winners were awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to Alaska. The educational adventure gave students first-hand knowledge of marine and avian biology, geology, glaciology and plate tectonics.

Also representing Arizona at the NSB will be a group of high school students from BASIS Chandler who also won their regional competition.

We want to hear from you.
