PHOENIX — A White Mountain Apache Tribe police officer was shot and killed during a confrontation with a suspect early Monday morning outside a casino in the Pinetop-Lakeside area, authorities said.

Police responded to the Hon-Dah Resort Casino around 1 a.m. to investigate a “shots fired” report and found a man matching the suspect description.

The suspect engaged the officer in a physical altercation and the officer was shot.

The fallen officer was identified as 26-year-old David Kellywood, who had been with the tribe for a year and previously had been a detention officer with the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office.

“We’re all at a loss today with the loss of his life,” Navajo County Sheriff David Clouse said in a press conference.

A second officer arrived on scene and shot and killed the suspect, police said.

The officer and suspect were taken to the hospital where both were pronounced dead, authorities said.

The FBI is taking over the investigation.

Gov. Doug Ducey ordered flags on all state building be lowered to half-staff Monday in honor of Kellywood.

“This tragedy is a reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face every day,” Ducey said in a tweet.

No additional information was immediately available.
