Elizabeth Warren slams ‘dangerous’ Arizona move to ban sanctuary cities

PHOENIX — Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren is speaking out against SCR1007, a proposal which is currently undergoing fierce debate in the Arizona state legislature.
Republican Sen. Sylvia Allen’s proposal would give Arizona voters the opportunity to include a statewide ban on sanctuary cities in the state constitution when they vote this November.
The controversial measure recently garnered a 4-3 party line approval in a raucous Senate Judiciary Committee hearing where protesters of the proposal had to be physically removed.
Darrell Hill, policy director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, summed up opposition to the measure during an impassioned testimony.

“SCR1007 turns every part of Arizona’s government into immigration enforcers, destroying the trust between community and government.”
Hill added that the proposal would plunge Arizona back “to the dark ages right after 1070 when political turmoil and fear gripped Arizona,” a claim which Gov. Doug Ducey’s office denies.
Following the Senate Judiciary Committee’s approval of the measure, presidential hopeful Warren took to twitter to echo Hill’s criticism.

Warren’s tweet comes after a fourth place finish in the New Hampshire primary, which was preceded by a third place finish in the Iowa caucus.
With lackluster support from voters during the Democratic Party’s first two primary election results, Phoenix’s upcoming presidential debate could be a make-or-break moment for the Warren campaign.
