PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Health Services has reported the state’s first infant flu death of the year.
The death happened in Yuma County, department spokesman Chris Minnick told KTAR News 92.3 FM in an email.
No other details were immediately available.
It was the second infant flu death of the season in Arizona. The first happened in Maricopa County in December.
The baby was too young to receive a flu shot, according to a press release from December.
No children in Maricopa County died from the flu in 2018, but three died in 2017.
So far this season, a total of about 20,000 flu cases have been reported to the state.
About 11,000 of those cases have happened in Maricopa County.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older get the flu vaccine.
