PHOENIX – Arizona highway troopers stopped a wrong-way driver on a freeway in Tempe early Friday, pulling over the driver before there was an accident.
A spokesman for the state’s Department of Public Safety said in an email the driver had been going southbound in northbound lanes on Loop 101 near Guadalupe Road around 3 a.m.
The driver didn’t get far, only to Baseline Road before officers managed to end the journey in the carpool lane.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
“We do find other people that (drive the wrong way) accidentally … they self-correct pretty rapidly,” DPS Director Col. Frank Milstead told KTAR News 92.3 FM hours after the arrest.
“It’s the ones that are impaired that drive for miles and miles and, obviously, put tons and tons of people at risk,” he said.
No other details were immediately available.
