PHOENIX — After winning its 2020 National Science Bowl (NSB) regional competition, a team of BASIS Chandler high school students will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to compete in the NSB National finals.

According to a press release, the finals will be held from April 30 to May 4, where 112 different middle and high school regional tournament winners will face off for their shot at national prominence, and possibly prizes for their own teams and schools.

The various competitions test students’ ability to strategize with their teams in a fast-paced setting where they must work together to find solutions to technical problems and display their knowledge on a multitude of scientific disciplines.

Science departments of the 16 top-performing high school teams and 16 top-performing middle school teams will each receive $1,000.

Although prizes for the 2020 NSB’s top two performing high schools have yet to be announced, last year’s winners were awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to Alaska. The educational adventure gave students first-hand knowledge of marine and avian biology, geology, glaciology and plate tectonics.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette touted the NSB as “one of the premier academic competitions across the country, preparing America’s next-generation for future success in the ever-expanding fields of science, technology, and engineering.”

“The Department of Energy is committed to fostering opportunities for our nation’s students, and we congratulate BASIS Chandler in advancing to the National Finals, where they will continue to showcase their talents as the top minds in math and science,” Brouillette said.

Over the NSB’s 29-year history, more than 300,000 students have put their scientific knowledge to the test at regional and national competitions.

We want to hear from you.
