PHOENIX – A West Valley city plans to spruce up some crosswalks in a very specific way – a checkered pattern – in preparation for hosting NASCAR Championship Weekend in the fall.
Work will begin in Avondale on Feb. 12 and last until Feb. 21, the city said in an email.
Crews will add the pattern across Avondale Boulevard at Maricopa Street, Buckeye Road, Durango Street, Whyman Street and Lower Buckeye Road.
There are already checkered crosswalks on Avondale Boulevard at Van Buren Street and Coldwater Springs Boulevard and at the Civic Center.
All the work will be done during off-hours to keep traffic disruption to a minimum, a city spokeswoman said.
Phoenix Raceway will host the NASCAR season finale for the first time Nov. 6-8. Drivers had been spending that weekend in Homestead, Florida, since 2002.
The Arizona facility recently reverted to its original name after a brief stint as ISM Raceway after a $178 million renovation.
The remodel was completed last year.
