PHOENIX — After more than two years of construction, the 12-mile Grand Canal trail system in the Phoenix area is in the final steps before its public reveal.
A grand opening for the completed project is scheduled for Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The celebration will start at Central Avenue and the Grand Canal before moving between Ninth Avenue and Seventh Street at 10:30 a.m.
Free to attend, there will be music, entertainment and interactive stations to participate at, according to the Facebook event page. There will also be food provided to guests.
The “Grand Canalscape,” as the city of Phoenix is calling it, goes along a 12-mile stretch beginning in the east around Priest Drive and Buckeye Road and stretching to the west around Osborn Road and Interstate 17.
The renovations included better trails, more overnight lighting, improved crosswalks, bridges over the canal and revamped neighborhood connections, according to the city.
Some landscape work was also done over the 12 miles.
