Wait for it: Disney bringing ‘Hamilton’ to movie theaters in 2021

Feb 3, 2020, 12:15 PM

How lucky we are to be alive right now.

“Hamilton: An American Musical,” the beloved show that’s been one of Broadway’s hottest tickets since debuting more than four years ago, is coming to the big screen next year.

Disney and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the blockbuster’s mastermind, revealed the highly anticipated news Monday, with an Oct. 15, 2021, release date.

The movie version will feature the original Broadway cast, which means Miranda in the title role and Leslie Odom Jr. as frenemy Aaron Burr.

It was actually shot in 2016 using what Disney called a “live capture” method onstage at the Richard Rogers Theatre, which has been the home of “Hamilton” since its Aug. 6, 2015, opening.

Miranda’s improbable fusion of hip-hop, American history and traditional Broadway tropes earned a record 16 Tony Award nominations in 2016 and won 11 times, one short of the mark set in 2001 by “The Producers.”

National tours of the stage show kicked off in 2017 with a run at ASU Gammage in Tempe the following year.

If the movie version doesn’t satisfy your “Hamilton” fix, the touring show is set to return to the Valley as part of Gammage’s 2020-21 season.

The film won’t be Miranda’s first collaboration with Disney. He wrote songs for and starred in the 2016 animated film “Moana” and played British lamplighter Jack in 2018’s “Mary Poppins Returns.”

A movie version of “In the Heights,” Miranda’s first Broadway hit, is due out in June.
