South Mountain Freeway design highlights regional architecture

PHOENIX – The newly opened Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway provides commuters with more than an alternative to Interstate 10.
The Arizona Department of Transportation worked to incorporate designs with local influence on the bridges, sound walls and landform graphics along the 22 miles of freeway.
The designs pay tribute to the styles of Arizona architect Frank Lloyd Wright and urban designer Paolo Soleri.
“Design choices are an important part of providing quality freeways for today and for future generations,” ADOT’s chief landscape architect LeRoy Brady said in a press release. “They enhance the experience of those who use the South Mountain Freeway.”
ADOT’s team designed the concepts with input from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Cosanti Foundation and the public.
The project also worked to incorporate landscapes with colorful plants, saguaros and native trees.
Crews are continuing to implement landscaping in the area.
