Self-driving Waymo van, 2nd vehicle collide in Tempe

PHOENIX – A self-driving minivan and another vehicle collided in Tempe late Thursday but no one was seriously injured, police said.
The Waymo van and the car crashed near Warner and Rural roads around 10:30 p.m. The driver, who was operating the van in manual mode, was taken to a hospital but her injuries weren’t life-threatening.
Neither the driver of the other car nor the passenger were injured. They remained on the scene, police said in an email.
Waymo said in a statement that the other car “erratically swerved in front of our vehicle, braking aggressively and abruptly coming to a full stop on a 45 mph road.”
The minivan then struck the passenger car in the rear.
The company said the van driver suffered neck pain and other minor injuries but had been released from the hospital.
Cause of the crash was still under investigation.

Across the country, the vehicles have driven more then 20,000 miles, the company said in an email recently.
