PHOENIX – Two people and two puppies avoided serious injury after a truck crashed into gas pumps and set off a fire at a Mesa convenience store.
Police said the driver and passenger ran from the scene near McKellips Road and Country Club Drive on Wednesday around 11:30 p.m., leaving behind the Shar-Pei puppies.
A fire department crew rescued the trapped puppies, who suffered minor burns to their paws and endured bits of melted plastic that landed on their fur.
A veterinarian said the dogs would be all right.
Detective Jason Flam said in an email that officers caught up to the driver about a mile away but the passenger hadn’t been found.
The driver, who was arrested, refused to name the other person.
No other details were immediately available.
